Happy Thursday! I can’t believe it’s almost the weekend. I guess having New Year’s in the middle of the week seem shorter.
New Domain Name
Before I talk about my workout for the day and an awesome brownie recipe, I’d like to celebrate finally doing something I’ve been meaning to do for a while: I bought my own domain name.
You may or may not notice this new addition since my blog name is as always Abs of Steel but rather than having thebarbellbaker.wordpress.com as my web address it now officially reads abs-of-steel.com
Yippee! I know it’s only a small change and you can still be redirected to my website through thebarbellbaker.wordpress.com but it makes me very happy to look at. It’s closer to the actual name of my blog and I now truly feel like I can call it my own :)
First off I’d like to mention I have been following the january core challenge that I decided to do. Today and yesterday I took a minute or two to do a 45 second plank and 20 pushups. Feeling good about it right now but I can imagine how this could become quite challenging as the weeks go on.
Today for Strength I did some workout videos using my kettle bell, dumbbells, and jump rope. It came out to be a bit of a longer workout than I think is really needed daily but I got kind of excited about trying out the different workout videos with my new equipment.
Here’s what I did:
20 mn Arm and Belly Fat Burn w/ Jump Rope – I liked this one because I was able to use my new jump rope. The strength intervals were a bit short in comparison to the jump rope ones but I still felt it in my arms and core. Plus all the jumping rope was a great way to warm up for the other videos
15 mn Dumbell Interval Sculpt – This was definitely a challenging workout. I tried using my kettlebell for the first 4 moves and my lower body was totally smoked.
15 mn Full Body Sweat – this one was deceiving hard. It is a full body workout but rather than alternate body part moves she makes you do 5 lower, 5 upper, and then 5 core moves. The lack of break on one body part really burned.
Overall a great workout, I feel very happy about my first strength workout for the year.
Sweet Potato Brownies
I hinted yesterday about some secret ingredient brownies. Well the secret’s out, if you couldn’t tell from the title, the secret ingredient is sweet potato.
I have made zucchini brownies and another variation of sweet potato brownies so I guess this recipe isn’t very out-of-place with my other healthified brownie recipes. Unlike my other sweet potato brownie recipe, this recipe is a bigger batch and uses a couple different ingredients (such as coconut oil) that really help these suckers taste delicious.
Without further ado
1 cup of flour ( I went 3/4 white, 1/4 whole wheat)
1/2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
4 Tablespoons of melted coconut oil
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup white sugar
3/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup of milk
1 medium-small sweet potato (or 1/2 cup mashed)
1. Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Oil and dust a 9×9 pan with cocoa powder.
2. Mix together the first 3 ingredients in a small bowl. In a bigger bowl mix the coconut oil, sugar, and sweet potato together.
3. Then mix in the cocoa powder and milk.
4. Finally mix in the flour mixture until well incorporated and spread the batter out evenly onto the pan. The batter will be thick so do your best to spread it evenly. Don’t worry if brownies seem thin, they will grow in the oven :)
5. Bake for 18 – 20 minutes. I baked these for 20 which cooked them perfectly, however I enjoy my brownies more on the slightly underdone side so in the future I’d do it for 18. Let them cool for 10 minutes and then cut into 16 servings.
As always my healthified versions of things are lower in calories/sugar/fat than the regular version (these are 105 calories each) so you can enjoy them with a little less guilt. However keep in mind that even healthier treats can add up if you have too many.
Despite the healthier tweaks, I truly believe these brownies are just as good as any non healthy version (ok maybe not the ones that have like 2 sticks of butter and 3 different kinds of chocolate).
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
